I would venture to say that most of us do not really think about it or the implications of being renewed, so can i encourage you to think through it with me for a moment? Today's verse is a well known verse to anyone who's been going to church over the years, but the truth is; there are several verses that add more color around the idea of being renewed and its impact on our lives. Being renewed appeals to our spiritual reality; meaning, we are growing in our knowledge and understanding of God by the Holy Spirit to be conformed into the image of the invisible God, Jesus Christ. (Col. 3:10). This is good news considering our outer bodies are wasting away[dying due to the curse], but our inner man is being transformed-a new heart maturing-every day (2 Cor. 4:16). Being renewed is the linear progression of sanctification as a new creation; our thought process changes along with our desires, so we have the ability[will]to act (Eph. 4:23). In other words, this allows us to walk in the Spirit(Rom. 7:6; 8:2; 4-6; 9-11; 13-16) because God has caused us to become new creations(Ezk. 36:26-27) as a result of placing our faith in the person and work of Christ. Therefore, Paul uses the illustration of taking off the "old"(Rom.6:6; Eph. 4:22; Col. 3:9) and "putting on the new" (Eph. 4:24; Col. 3:10) because we're renewed. We are no longer slaves to sin and the deeds of the flesh(Jn. 8:34; Rom. 8:13) , but rather, slaves to righteousness(Rom. 6:19) with the ability to put on the new and its deeds from a new heart. In Christ, we're being renewed, which is the Work of God, by the Holy Spirit, through Christ Jesus our LORD.
